It is the brain child  of Microchip Technology ,USA. Originally this was developed as a supporting device for PDP computer to control its peripheral device ,and therefore named as PIC Peripheral Interface Controller. they have coined this name to identify their single chip micro controller. These 8-bit micro  controller have become very important now a days in industrial automation and embedded application etc.
